Capital City Youth Ballet’s mission statement is to be a ballet company open to pre-professional dancers ages 12 – 18, which strives to provide a training ground for students who wish to pursue dance at the collegiate level or as a career. Additionally, the Capital City Youth Ballet company welcomes collaboration with local artists in support of community events. As a non-profit 501(c)3, this organization offers theatrical performances in the Nampa Civic Center as well as educational dance appearances in other venues throughout the valley to encourage young children to explore and enjoy dance.

This year’s Capital City Youth Ballet’s Winter Show will feature the timeless story ballet of “The Fairy Doll.” A tale of beautiful dolls in a toyshop magically coming to life. Also, on the program will be excerpts from the classical ballet La Bayadere and an original work of dance by local choreographer Jo Anne Michaels.

The Fairy Doll began life as Die Puppenfee (In the Doll Shop), to music by Austrian composer Josef Bayer, and first premiered at the Vienna Court Opera on October 4 1888. In 1903 it was restaged for the Mariinsky Ballet, a version in which Anna Pavlova danced a starring role, and it is still a beloved, charming ballet which has continued to be performed to present day.

The story opens on a busy toy shop. The toymaker shows a number of his creations to an English family, and they are very impressed by the craftmanship of all the toys. The English family buys several dolls for their daughters and leave for home. Meanwhile, pleased with the sale, the toymaker finishes up for the night unaware that the youngest daughter of the English family has snuck back into the store for one final look at all the marvelous toys. No sooner does the hour strike, than the dolls magically come alive, dancing and performing a number of dances from across the globe. Presently, the toymaker hears some noise and rushes back into the shop, to find the girl amongst the toys. When about to scold the child, the Fairy Doll and her doll friends step forward to let her know that she need not be upset with the young daughter because everything is in order, and the toymaker and girl stand amazed at all the dolls come to life.
